Here, we will sketch out the most simple, yet comprehensive northeast trip itinerary that you can follow with your eyes closed for a rich travelling experience.
Day 1
Kick start your northeast trip from Guwahati, which is the most popular starting destination, owing to the accessibility it provides to the other northeast states. From here, your first destination is Cherrapunjee which is approximately a 5-hour drive. On the way, you can stop at Umiam Lake - a mesmerising artificial lake set amid hilly terrains. Originally built as a dam, this lake now offers scenic views and fun water activities where you can spend 2-3 hours. After a satisfying lunch, resume your journey and head on straight to the town of Cherrapunjee. For a good night’s rest, we recommend a stay at Polo Resort, Cherrapunjee, which offers views of the Nohsngithiang waterfall.
Day 2
Wake up to a fine morning at Polo Resort. After an early breakfast, prepare for a day of exhilaration and scenic beauty. First, head on to the naturally lit Mawsmai Caves that is located at a distance of 2.2 km. From here travel 12 km, trek up to the spectacular Nohkalikai Falls - the fourth tallest plunge waterfall in the world, with a lagoon-like pool at its base. After having your fill of the panoramic views, depart for the final destination of the day, towards the natural marvel of a double-decker bridge formation known as Living Root Bridge. Return to the resort and relax.
Day 3
After a wholesome breakfast, drive for approximately 2 hours to your next destination - Shillong. To ensure that you always receive the best, we recommend staying at Polo Towers, Shillong. Check-in with ease and have an exquisite open-air dining experience at Sky Grill restaurant here. Thereafter, hop out to resume your exploration. You may have seen an eagle, but have you seen a waterfall that resembles this majestic creature in flight? Visit Spread Eagle Falls to witness the specific marvel. The small and secluded waterfall is a perfect spot to unwind and appreciate the unparalleled beauty that nature presents us with. Then head towards Shillong View Point, Laitkor Peak with its observation towers that overlook the entire city of Shillong. Fall in love as you witness the spectacle of millions of lamps lighting up the city at dusk. Return to enjoy a cosy stay at Polo Towers, Shillong.
Day 4
Wake up to an early bright day with more excitement and adventure to follow. Ride out to Agartala in Tripura on a long, yet totally worthwhile trip, and on the way, make a pit stop at the heritage site of Unakoti. These hills with their intricate carvings of Lord Shiva, are an awe-inspiring sight. After your quick sightseeing, continue to Agartala. The entire ride including the pitstop, will take approximately 14 hours. After you reach Agartala, opt to crash at Polo Hotel, Agartala, and enjoy a merited sleep.
Day 5
After a scrumptious breakfast, visit the most popular attraction in the city - Ujjayanta Palace. A royal palace turned museum, relive the history of the Tripura greats. Later, head on over to Neermahal Water Palace. This beautiful palace built at the centre of lake Twijilikma is a must-see when you're in Tripura. Thereafter, return to the city streets and go crazy at the local market that showcases various handicrafts, handlooms of the skilled local artisans and hunt for souvenirs and gifts to take back home and boast of your enchanting northeast India tour.
