Victoria Memorial
Established in 1921, Victoria Memorial is a white-marbled monument surrounded by 64-acres of lush garden. The memorial’s central dome consists of a beautiful figure of the Angel of Victory. The garden houses a museum which consists of 25 galleries that dispays a wide variety of collections of antique paintings, books, arms, sculptures and more. Victoria Memorial is of both historical and architectural significance, and a must-visit destination for history lovers!
Indian Museum
Indian Museum was established in 1814 and is one of the most prominent historical monuments in Kolkata. It is the ninth oldest museum in the world and one of the oldest and largest museums in Kolkata. The museum houses a fine collection of historical objects and artifacts, one of which is a 4000-year old Egyptian mummy. It also protects contemporary paintings, ancient sculptures and sacred relics of Buddha.
Howrah Bridge
The majestic Howrah Bridge across River Hoogly is an excellent example of architectural brilliance. It is one of the best historical places of Kolkata that serves as a prominent landmark in the city. Commissioned in 1943, it is the busiest cantilever bridge in the world. Also known as Rabindra Setu, it connects Howrah and Kolkata and shoulders a daily traffic of over 150,000 pedestrians and around 100,000 vehicles.
Fort William
One of the most famous monuments of Kolkata, Fort William was established in 1969 by the British East India Company and was named after King William III. The fort is spread across a massive area of 70 hectares and is situated along the eastern banks of River Hoogly. Designed with intricate stonework, Fort William is reminiscent of Kolkata’s colonial legacy. At present times, it serves as the Indian Army headquarters of the Eastern Command.
Writer’s Building
One of the top historical places in Calcutta, Writer’s Building was built in 1777 and served as the office of the writers of the East India Company. Influenced by a distinct Greco-Roman style of architecture, Writer’s Building is a must-visit for history buffs. Presently, it serves as the secretariat building for the state government of West Bengal.
